Artist Statement:
I am a local artist, and being from this beautiful area, nature is a significant influence in my work. The rural areas that I grew up around seem to be where my creativity levels are at their highest. I tend to use organic forms ranging from our local flora and landscapes, to the ultimate natural masterpiece; the human body. I prefer to keep my color pallet limited to earth tones with additions of contrasting colors, providing points of interest. My work is minimalistic and I let my forms and surface stand alone with simplicity.
As a studio artist my preferred mediums are metals such as copper, brass, and silver, ceramics, both hand built forms as well as wheel thrown, and fibers. The combinations of mediums and techniques create a somewhat unique perspective on the inner relationships between the artist and their concept. My knowledge of all these diverse forms will enable me to incorporate them into singular creations.
Plant life is also something that has had a large influence on my work recently. The connection between us bringing plants inside with us, and plants bringing us out to them. We depend on them and we relate to them in so many ways. Their forms mimic our bodies and sometimes are sexual in nature, but sex creates life and life cannot be sustained without these integral parts of our environment. So working with organic materials and mixing them with other combinations of elements and different variations in my work is my representation of the “circle of life”.
